By the end of first grade, students Can...
Reading
Reads fluently and comprehends at a level J
Accurately reads a minimum of 100 sight words
Able to take words apart and put words together
Uses a variety of strategies (illustrations) to solve unknown words and understand the story
Reads and uses information in nonfiction books and locates nonfiction text features (glossary, graph, table of contents)
Writing
Self selects a topic and provides details to support that topic
Writes a story with a beginning, middle and end
Begins to develop personality (voice) in writing
Uses proper spacing, capitalization and punctuation in a sentence
Science
Classifying and sorting (insects and spiders)
Habitats and survival
Weather patterns and cycles
Math
Skip Count by 2s and 5s
Understand place value and represents two digit numbers and amounts of tens and ones
Knows addition and subtraction facts through 20
Solve simple addition and subtraction word problems within 20 using a variety of strategies
Measure length using nonstandard units (paper clips, bears)
Tell and write time to the nearest half hour
Count money using dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies
